FINAL MEETING WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK PROJECT ” STRENGTHENING DEMOGRAPHIC STATISTICS IN THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN” AND THE OFFICIAL CEREMONY OF SUMMING UP THE RESULTS OF THE POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TAJIKISTAN IN 2020

Today at the Agency on statistics under the President Republic of Tajikistan the final meeting of the Steering Committee on Population and Development was held within the framework of the project “Strengthening Demographic Statistics in the Republic of Tajikistan”, within the framework of which the official ceremony of summing up the results of the population and housing census for 2020 was also held.

The meeting was attended by the management and heads of departments and divisions of the statistics agency, representatives of ministries and departments and development partners, such as the UN Population Fund office in Tajikistan, the UN Children’s Fund office in Tajikistan, the UN Development Programme office in Tajikistan, the International Organization for Migration office in Tajikistan, the World Food Programme office in Tajikistan and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Tajikistan.

Meeting started director Statistical Agency under the President Republic of Tajikistan. Jamshed Nurmahmadzoda , expressing gratitude to the government of the country and development partners who provided assistance and support in the preparation and high-level implementation of an important political campaign – the population and housing census in 2020, and also provide technical and methodological assistance in improving demographic statistics, increasing the level of knowledge and work of statistical officials.

Jamshed Nurmahmadzoda noted that demographic statistics are the only statistical source that is used to assess the level of well-being of the country, indicators of income and expenditure of the population, the level of provision of the population with food, non-food goods and services, to assess the level of poverty, food poverty and calculate the middle class of the population, as well as other indicators related to spending on health care, education and other areas.

• Because effective result generalizations and analysis of demographic statistics and the indicators achieved in this direction, creates a favorable basis for determining the prospects for the country’s socio-economic development and increasing the level of well-being of the people.

At It was noted that demographic statistical indicators contribute to ensuring key national indicators in the National Development Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan for the period up to 2030, the medium-term development program of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2021-2025, as well as in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and assessing their implementation as the only source of statistical information.

Jamshed Nurmahmadzoda characterized census population and housing fund as important state-political event and noted the role of its results in the development of strategies for national and regional programs, and the assessment of the demographic and social situation of the population .

In this direction, the expert of the country’s statistical body Rizoev Najmiddin made a report on the topic “Results of the Population and Housing Census of the Republic of Tajikistan in 2020”, including the change in the population of the Republic of Tajikistan in the period 1970-2020, the change in the population of the Republic of Tajikistan in urban and rural areas in the period 1970-2020, the difference in the number of men and women in the 2000-2020 population census, the number and ratio of men and women in the regions of the Republic and presented a detailed report on the results of the population and housing census 2010-2020, etc.

Participants meetings asked questions about nuances conducting events to which the agency’s management and responsible persons gave precise answers.

It should be noted that in accordance with the Decrees of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan dated October 12, 2015 No. 572 “On the preparation and conduct of the population and housing census of the Republic of Tajikistan in 2020”, dated September 30, 2019 No. 1356 “On the population and housing census of the Republic of Tajikistan in 2020” and the Law of the Republic of Tajikistan dated May 19, 2009 No. 523 “On the population census”, as well as in accordance with the UN recommendations for all countries to conduct a population census every ten years , a population and housing census was conducted in the Republic of Tajikistan from October 1 to 15, 2020.
